Lagerstroemia indica - Lipan
Landscape value: A popular cultivar from the Indian Summer® range, Lagerstroemia ‘Lipan’ is tough and has year round interest including a long flowering period. Useful around buildings, carparks and along fence lines.
Height: 4 metre(s)
Width: 3 metre(s)
Growth rate: Slow to moderate.
Habit: Vase shaped, upright, slightly spreading at the crown. Multi-stemmed and somewhat irregular.
Foliage: Dark green leaves, turning light orange to russet in autumn.
Flowers: Masses of medium lavender coloured flowers in large panicles are produced on current season’s growth in summer.
Fruit: Insignificant capsules.
Bark: Dark greenish-grey coloured, exfoliating (after about three years) to reveal a very attractive ornamental whitish-beige underbark.
Tolerances: Adaptable to a range of conditions, heat and some dryness but requires adequate moisture during establishment. Bred for resistance to powdery mildew.
Comments: Best in moist, well drained, slightly acidic soils in a position receiving full sun. Transplants easily provided adequate moisture levels are maintained. Bare rooted Indian Summer® Lagerstroemia should be pruned back by 30% when planted – this will help promote spring growth by allowing the plant to first establish a strong root system.
