Lime - West Indian
Description: Often referred to as the “true lime”, this popular lime has very small, round to oval fruit with a smooth, leathery rind which is greenish-yellow at maturity. The juicy, greenish-yellow flesh is highly acidic and has a distinctive aroma. West Indian Limes are evergreen, vigorous trees with green, glossy leaves and fragrant creamy-white blossom. Frost sensitive.
Use: Container plant in courtyards, feature tree in Mediterranean style gardens, espaliered along a sunny wall, ornamental tree. The fruit is highly nutritious, rich in Vitamin C, refreshing and ideal for juicing, desserts, cocktails, garnishes, cooking especially Asian dishes and curries. Can be used as a sweeter alternative to lemons.
Position: Plant in a sunny position with well drained soil and sheltered from strong winds.
Watering: Moderate water requirement.
Care: Water during the warmer months, especially when fruits are forming. In containers water every three to four days, more often in hot weather. Do not water the trunk. Fertilise in Spring and late Summer - early Autumn with a fertilizer high in nitrogen but do not allow to touch the trunk. Prune in late Spring, removing inside weak growth and to shape the tree.
Planting: Add organic matter to the soil before planting. Dig hole twice the width of the container. Remove plant from the container and place in the hole so the soil level is the same as the surrounding ground. Fill hole firmly, and water in well, even if the soil is moist. If planting in a container, use a premium potting mix. The container should be a minimum size of 60cm x 60cm.
