Lagerstroemia indica - Zuni
Landscape value: A very free-flowering and tough shrub or small tree providing interest throughout the year, Lagerstroemia ‘Zuni’ is among the smaller growing cultivars in the Indian Summer® range making it excellent for uses such as small garden areas, road median strips and public forecourt planting.
Height: 4 metre(s)
Width: 3 metre(s)
Growth rate: Slow to moderate.
Habit: Rounded with upright branching. Multi-stemmed.
Foliage: Glossy, leathery, medium green leaves turn reddish-orange to dark red in autumn. Young growth tinged red.
Flowers: Masses of dark lavender coloured flowers mid-summer to early autumn.
Fruit: Reported (overseas) to be seedless.
Bark: Young branches are heavily pigmented red, mature branches exfoliate (after about three years) to reveal a light, greyish-brown underbark.
Tolerances: Adaptable to a range of conditions, heat and some dryness but requires adequate moisture during establishment. Moderate resistance to powdery mildew.
Comments: Best in moist, well drained, slightly acidic soils in a position receiving full sun. Transplants easily provided adequate moisture levels are maintained. Bare rooted Indian Summer® Lagerstroemia should be pruned back by 30% when planted – this will help promote spring growth by allowing the plant to first establish a strong root system.
