Lagerstroemia indica - Biloxi
Landscape value: A tough, small tree that offers attractive bark, masses of pale pink flowers in summer and good yellow-orange autumn colours. Suitable for small gardens and amenity areas or can be a very effective street tree.
Height: 7 metre(s)
Width: 5 metre(s)
Growth rate: Slow to moderate.
Habit: Open, vase shaped. Forms a neat outline as it matures.
Foliage: Leathery green leaves, turning yellow to reddish-orange in autumn.
Flowers: Masses of pale pink flowers in large, terminal panicles for an extended period from mid-summer to early autumn.
Fruit: Insignificant brown capsules.
Bark: Beige outer bark, exfoliating (after about three years) to reveal a cinnamon coloured underbark.
Tolerances: Adaptable to a range of conditions, heat and some dryness but requires adequate moisture during establishment. Bred for resistance to powdery mildew.
Comments: Best in moist, well drained, slightly acidic soils in a position receiving full sun. Transplants easily provided adequate moisture levels are maintained. Bare rooted Indian Summer® Lagerstroemia should be pruned back by 30% when planted – this will help promote spring growth by allowing the plant to first establish a strong root system.
