Lime - West Indian 200mm Pot
Citrus aurantifolia
Description of plant at maturity:
Popularity: Also known as the Key Lime, this variety is great for anyone who finds themselves with left over fruit at the end of harvest because the fruit keeps very well.
Fruit: Small, juicy fruit with lots of seeds. Smooth, light green skin and pale flesh. Fruit falls from the tree at maturity but keeps well for a number of weeks when refrigerated.
Tree: The West Indian lime is more frost sensitive than the Tahitian lime, and requires a warm, sheltered position to grow well in our temperate climate.
Main Harvest: It will produce its main crop in Winter, but will fruit throughout the year.
Uses:
The West Indian lime is perfect for seasoning fish, as well as juicing and using in other hot dishes.
Care: Water during the warmer months, especially when fruits are forming. In containers water every three to four days, more often in hot weather. Do not water the trunk. Fertilise in Spring and late Summer - early Autumn with a fertilizer high in nitrogen but do not allow to touch the trunk. Prune in late Spring, removing inside weak growth and to shape the tree.
Planting: Add organic matter to the soil before planting. Dig hole twice the width of the container. Remove plant from the container and place in the hole so the soil level is the same as the surrounding ground. Fill hole firmly, and water in well, even if the soil is moist. If planting in a container, use a premium potting mix. The container should be a minimum size of 60cm x 60cm.
Watering: Moderate water requirement.
Position: Plant in a sunny position with well drained soil and sheltered from strong winds.
Height: 4m
