The Minneola tangelo is a vigorous and productive citrus tree, producing a tangy fruit. Offers ornamental value.
Fruit:
Minneola tangelos are medium sized fruit with red-orange skin and a distinctive prominent neck. The flesh is rich, juicy and melts away as you eat it. The flavour is tangy with a slight resemblance to grapefruit.
Tree:
A vigorous grower with high yields reaching only 4m in height. Requires a mandarin pollinator to ensure good fruit set.
Main Harvest:
Harvest Minneola tangelos in mid to late Winter. Leave fruit to develop fully on the tree for the best flavour.
Uses:
Ideal for eating fresh and using in desserts.
Care: Water during the warmer months, especially when fruits are forming. In containers water 3-4 days, more often in hot weather. Do not water the trunk. Fertilise in Spring and late Summer – early Autumn with a fertilizer high in nitrogen, do not allow to touch trunk. Prune in late Spring removing inside and weak growth and to shape the tree.
Planting: Add organic matter to the soil before planting. Dig hole twice the width of the container. Remove plant from container and place into the hole so the soil level is the same as the surrounding ground. Fill hole firmly and water in well even if the soil is moist. The container should be a minimum size of approximately 60cm x 60cm.
Position: Requires a warm, sunny, sheltered situation with well-drained soil rich in organic matter.
