Tasmannia - Pepperberry 175mm Pot
Tasmannia lanceolata ''Tucker Bush - Mountain Pepper'' aka the Pepperberry
Description of plant at maturity:
Pepperberry, or Mountain Pepper, is an evergreen shrub that is most commonly grown for use as a culinary spice. It is used in traditional Aboriginal cuisine and medicinal treatments. It is native to the south-eastern region of Australia.
Small creamy flowers mature into red pepper berries from spring to autumn, if both male and female plants are present. The berries turn black when ripe. The leaves, flowers and berries both offer a peppery flavour that is ideal for fresh salads, curries, cheese dishes, salad dressings and sauces.
Berries can be frozen. Dried berries are a pungent native substitute for black pepper. Leaves are best harvested from Febuary to September before the bush begins to flower. Berries should be harvested from March to May.
Pepperberry grows best in lime free, fertile soil in moist and well drained soils. Ideally it will also be protected from the hot summer sun and dry prevailing winds.
