Orange - Washington Navel 200mm Pot

Citrus sinensis

Description of plant at maturity:
Popularity: The Washington Navel is the most popular and best eating orange in SA. It is usually seedless and grows well in our climate. Fruit is child friendly.

Fruit: Fruit is medium to large and has a rich, sweet flavour and easy-to-peel skin. Fruit does not usually contain seeds. Can become bitter if stored for more than 1-2 days so fruit/juice is best enjoyed fresh.

Tree:
A small to medium sized citrus tree, growing only to 4m tall, that performs well in SA. Washington Navel grows some thorns.

Main Harvest: The Washington Navel will produce its main harvest in Winter, but fruits throughout the year.

Uses:
The Washington Navel is best eaten fresh and is particularly popular for its seedless traits.

Care: Water during the warmer months, especially when fruits are forming. In container water three to four days, more often in hot weather. Do no water the trunk. Fertilise in spring and late summer – early autumn with a fertiliser high in nitrogen, do not allow to touch trunk. Prune in late spring removing inside and weak growth and to shape the tree.

Planting: Add organic matter to the soil before planting. Dig hole twice the width of the container. Remover plant from container and place into the hole so the soil level is the same as the surrounding ground. Fill hole firmly and water in well even if the soil is moist. If planting in containers use a premium potting mix. The container should be a minimum size of approximately 60cm x 60cm.

Watering: Moderate water requirement

Position: Plant in a sunny position with well drained soil and sheltered from strong winds.
